At VenturePath, our expert network brings together those who’ve built, backed, scaled, and exited businesses - and who now help others do the same. They’re not here to share theoretical advice, but to offer practical, actionable insights drawn directly from their own experience.
In this edition of Insights from the Inside: The Expert Edition, we’re excited to feature Alan Furley, Founders of ISL Talent. Alan helps venture-backed startups build high-performing teams - having led hundreds of startup hires from seed stage to Series B. He helps founders shape roles, source top talent, and make hires that actually scale. As part of the VenturePath expert network, Alan offers both strategic guidance and hands-on recruitment support across commercial, technical, and leadership roles. Here’s what he had to say:
Q&A with Alan Furley
What’s the one mistake you see founders making that holds them back from scaling effectively?
"Hiring for optics over stage-fit. Titles that impress investors or land “big name” candidates often create future problems. What matters isn’t credentials - it’s whether someone thrives in ambiguity, moves fast, and grows with the role."
What’s one small change that can have a massive positive impact on a founder’s ability to scale?
"Define what success looks like 12-18 months after the hire. Align your leadership team on that, then go recruit. That clarity improves how you advertise, assess, onboard, and review - turning hiring from a gut decision into a strategic one."
What’s one trend you see shaping the future for startups over the next 12 months?
"Of course it’s AI! It’s obviously changing how we hire, but more so I think it changes who you hire. Fluency with AI tools is becoming as important as experience. Startups need builders who adapt fast, not just specialists who rely on old playbooks."
What’s one thing that founders waste time and money on while scaling that they shouldn’t?
"Overvaluing big-name CVs. Just because someone worked at a unicorn doesn’t mean they can build one. Founders often mistake logos for contribution - and end up with people who look great on pitch decks but don’t get stuck in."
